의미: than than은 「…보다(도)」의 뜻을 나타내는 말이므로 앞뒤에 각각 비교의 대상이 놓이는데 than 뒤에서는 주절과 공통되는 부분은 생략되기 일쑤이다:She is smaller than I (am). 그러나 《구어》에서는 She is smaller than me.도 쓰는데 이때의 than은 전치사로 볼 수 있다.
한편 다음 경우에는 주격이냐 목적격이냐에 따라 뜻이 달라진다：(a) He likes me better than she (does) (=than she likes me). (b) He likes me better than her (=than he likes her). 《구어》에서는 (b)로 (a)의 뜻 (=than she likes me)을 나타내기도 한다.
than은 원래 비교의 기능을 하는 말이므로 형용사·부사의 비교급이 앞에 놓이며, 그렇지 못할 경우에는 그에 준하는 rather, other, otherwise, else, 《미》 different 등의 말이 반드시 오는 데에 유의해야 한다.

▶ I like you better than him. 나는 그이보다 너쪽을 더 좋아한다. ★ than him은 than I like him의 I like가 생략된 형태; prep. 1과는 다름
▶ He is more intelligent than clever. 그는 영리하다기보다 지적인 사람이다.
▶ He is no happier than (he was) before. 그는 그전과 다름없이 조금도 행복하지 않다.
▶ I suppose the winters are colder than they used to be. 옛날보다 겨울이 더 추워졌다고 나는 생각한다.
▶ She arrived earlier than the others. 그녀는 다른 사람들보다 일찍 도착했다.
▶ Foreign cars are becoming more popular than they were. 외제차들이 이전보다 더욱 인기를 끌고 있다.
▶ I am wiser than to believe that. 그것을 믿을 만큼 어리석지는 않다.

2 [관계대명사적으로] …보다(도) ★ 목적어·주어·보어의 역할을 겸한 용법
▶ There is more money than is needed. 필요 이상의 돈이 있다.
▶ He required more than could be anticipated. 그는 예상했던 것보다 많은 것을 요구했다.
▶ Her assistance was more valuable than had been supposed. 그녀의 도움은 생각되었던 것보다 귀중한 것이었다.

3 [rather, sooner 등과 함께] …하느니보다 (오히려), …할 바에는 (차라리)
▶ I would rather[sooner] die than disgrace myself. 수모를 당하느니보다 차라리 죽는 편이 낫겠다.
▶ I prefer to stay rather than (to) go. 가느니보다 머물러 있는 게 낫겠다. 《I would rather stay than go.로 고쳐 쓸 수 있음》

4a [other, otherwise, else 등과 함께; 종종 부정문에서] …밖에는, …이외에는
▶ I have no other friend than you. 친구라고는 자네밖에 없다.
▶ He was no[none] other than the king. 그는 다름아닌 왕이었다.
▶ I could not do otherwise than run away. 달아나는 수밖에 다른 도리가 없었다.
▶ He did nothing else than laugh. 그는 다만 웃기만 할 뿐이었다.
